It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Hunter March of Austin Texas. Hunter died on October 17, 2023. He was 85.
His early life was spent in Birdsboro PA where he graduated from high school in 1956. He was the drum major of the band and was also the school organist. He spent his entire life pursuing his love of music. After graduation he attended Lebanon Valley College in Annville PA where he graduated with a BA degree in Music Education. He then began teaching music education in East Orange New Jersey for middle school students. This was his stepping stone to his illustrious music career.
Next, he pursued his Masters Degree and his Doctorate from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Upon completing his Doctorate, he went on to the University of Texas at Austin where he began his 41 year tenure with the university.
While at UT, Hunter was a teacher, head of the University graduate assembly and liaison to many other colleges and departments. He also worked with the Independent School Districts all over the state of Texas.
In addition to his career at UT he did teaching for the United States Department of Defense schools in Europe. Dr. March was also a Silver-Burdett & Ginn author in which his work had presence all over the world in his writings of music education that are still being used today.
Upon retiring from UT in 2018, his love of music arts continued. Living in Overture in Mueller in Austin, he would bring stellar music programs to the residents that were enjoyed by all. Many of his entertainers were his graduate students and faculty of UT. He did this for many years and brought enjoyment to hundreds of his neighbors.
Hunter was the son of C. Hunter March and Mary E. March of Birdsboro, PA, both deceased. He was the brother of LaRue D. Spencer of Ephrata, PA. He is survived by his loving nephew and his wife, Dennis L and Lisa Spencer of Lititz, PA. He was loved by great nephews John D Spencer of Mountville, PA and Nicholas T Spencer of Yorktown, VA, their wives and children. He will be dearly missed by his entire family.
