M. John Kiefer, 79 of Mohnton, Robeson Twp., PA passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 29, 2022, at Reading Hospital. He was born in Geigertown, PA, the son of the late Marvin J. and the late Elizabeth (Helfrich) Kiefer. He was the loving, devoted husband of Beverly E. (Keller) Kiefer.
John “worked” for Met-Ed for 31 years and retired as a repairman. While at work, he could often be spotted wandering the hallways and smoking a pipe. John was generally quiet and reserved in nature, yet people were attracted to him like a magnet. His wife Beverly apparently got bamboozled in 1963 when they met on a blind date, and the two have been together ever since. John was known for his sharp-witted, yet usually dry sense of humor. And yes, he often spoke without a filter. Our apologies to anyone who he offended over the years.
John had an uncanny ability to instantly identify classic cars by year, make and model. A Mopar man by heart, he often reminisced about the hijinks that would ensue while he was behind the wheel of his beloved 1963 Plymouth Belvedere. In his younger days, John went small game hunting with his Beagles. And even though he often wouldn’t fire a shot, he found much pleasure in just watching his cherished Beagles in action. He had an eclectic love of music – amongst his favorite artists were Meat Loaf, Leon Redbone, and PDQ Bach. He also enjoyed watching sporting events (especially PSU Football), Star Trek (TOS), Svengoolie, and for some reason – the Weather Channel. He had hopes to one day cross paths with Ann-Margret and leave his wife for good, but that never happened.
John’s final day with us consisted of trimming a Forsythia, successfully repairing some electronic equipment, and taking his Dodge truck for its weekly joy ride. He frowned upon vehicles which did not have a clutch pedal. And as usual, we’re sure that any rubber that he left on the asphalt that day was because “the road was hot”.
Surviving John, along with his wife, Beverly are, son: John Poul Kiefer, whose middle name has caused confusion since birth. Despite this, in his son’s eyes – John was regarded as the smartest person on the planet and a bona fide hero. He was a #1 Dad and husband and will truly be missed.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
