Gary Douglass Leffler, 73, passed peacefully at the Reading Hospital on Nov. 3rd, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Susan (Springer) Leffler.
Gary was born in Reading on October 12, 1948, the second of four children to the late Geraldine (Trupp) Leffler and Milton Leffler. Gary was a 1966 graduate of Wilson High School. He played the French horn in their nationally ranked marching band where he met his high school sweetheart, love of his life, and future wife, Susan, who was a majorette. Throughout his life Gary loved the outdoors, and one of his favorite rituals was taking a daily walk at Daniel Boone Homestead with Susan.
A loyal Nittany Lion, Gary graduated from Penn State before joining McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. He then began a career that spanned four decades with the Metropolitan Edison Company until his retirement in 2009 as the Superintendent of Maintenance at the Titus Generating Station in Cumru Township. During his “retirement,” Gary enjoyed providing onsite assistance to various power plants in the Northeast during their outages. A consummate engineer, Gary was known by his family as someone who could fix anything.
Gary was a devoted father to Stephanie, Thomas, and Michael; he was a proud and loving grandfather to Ian, Christopher, and Anna. Gary is also survived by brother, Gregory, and wife Sharon Leffler; sister, Sharon Steffy, and husband Barry; sister, Sandra Leffler, and partner Steven Chelius; son-in-law, Jeffrey Bricker; daughter-in-law, Yuko Aoyagi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gary’s sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, and eager willingness to lend a helping hand will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held this Saturday, the 6th of November at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro. Visitation will begin at 10:30 in the morning with the service to follow at 11:00.
