Robert P. Withers

Robert P. Withers, 90, of Birdsboro, Union Twp., Berks Co., PA died on Friday, August 18, 2017, at the Coatesville VA Medical Center. Born on January 8, 1927, in Los Angeles, CA, he was the son of the late Alfred J. and Mary E. (Montroy) Withers. He was the husband of Gisela S. (Fischer) Withers.

Robert was a mechanical engineer who loved to create with his hands. He made beautiful furniture for his home and was an accomplished oil painter.  Robert served in the US Navy in WWII. He was wounded on the island of Angaur in the Pacific Theater, for which he received the Purple Heart.  His passion for painting and the fine arts grew when he was given art supplies during his year-long stay at Bethesda Naval Hospital for surgeries and rehabilitation.  He was member of the PA Academy of Fine Arts and a popular and much admired student at the Wayne Art Center.  Robert was an extremely well-read man who could converse with anyone on any subject. He loved listening to classical music.  He was kind and gentle, a soft spoken man with a great wit – qualities that endeared him to so many.

Robert is survived, along with his wife, by: 4 sons: Larry K. Withers, husband of Sharyn of FL, Richard S. Withers of Coatesville, PA, Allan B. Withers, widower of Carole of Lansdowne, PA, Robert C. Withers of West Chester, PA; 3 daughters: Cynthia J. Hays, widow of Floyd of Pleasant View, TN, Carolyn S. Withers of Jenkintown, PA, Barbara L. Ginsburg, wife of Neal of Bensalem, PA. He is also survived 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren
